Heathside School

Beyond the Classroom

Clubs and Activities

Heathside has always focused on offering a well-rounded education, encouraging children to try new and unusual things – experience more, and learn more during the process.

Heathside prides itself on the wide range of activities we offer as extra-curricular clubs, and we encourage children to try many different activities to excite their interest and discover their passions,

We run a range of clubs and activities for different age groups including: Art, Athletics, Band, Capoeira, Chess, Chinese, Choir, Code Club, Creative Movements, Dance, Debating, Drama, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Model UN, Science.

Our sport teachers are specialists who coach a range of team sports including football, cricket, rounders, basketball and netball. Heathside teams play frequent friendlies against other schools. We use a number of different sports facilities in the local area, many within walking distance and others a short coach ride away.

Our physical activity programme includes swimming, cross-country running, gymnastics, wrestling, athletics, music and movement, karate, yoga and capoeira.

Chess at Heathside is truly inclusive. We encourage children of all ages and abilities to take part in order to benefit from the analytical skills and critical thinking involved in chess, and to experience the highs and lows of wins and losses in a supportive and nurturing environment. Heathside School has one of the strongest junior chess teams in the country, recognised nationally by the English Chess Federation (ECF) as a Leadership School for its role in the positive promotion of chess across the UK. Heathside has also been awarded the British Chess Educational Trust Award for the school’s continued work in chess.

As yearly finalists, Heathside competes in both the English Primary Schools and the National Schools Chess Championships. Heathside has received many accolades over the years, including several championships from the English Primary Schools Chess Association. In 2018 they came third in the National Chess Finals and fifth at the Primary Schools Chess Finals, and have received several firsts over the years. Heathside also held English Primary Schools Chess Association’s National Small School Champion title for eight years running from 2004.

The school also has a senior school chess club and has initiated U13 chess competitions and national titles with the English Chess Federation. This year, the U13 team came third in the national Junior Team Chess Challenge, and, even with stiff competition, qualified for the following stage of the U19 National Chess Championships. The senior school team has already qualified for the final of the Junior Team Chess Challenge in 2019 and the National Problem-Solving Championships. The U11 team have qualified for the semi-finals of two chess National tournaments.

From Nursery upwards, all children are encouraged to take part so that performing in front of an audience becomes a normal part of school life. Our productions cover a wide range of genres including Shakespeare, Gilbert & Sullivan and major classical and modern plays and musicals.

We have a thriving drama programme that includes almost twenty annual productions.

Our older children are often invited to perform at local events such as the Hampstead Fair, and sometimes do performances for charity such as at local care homes.

“Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.”

– Plato

Music is an essential part of Heathside school life, both in the curriculum, starting in Nursery, and in school clubs.

Our vocal instruction includes an accomplished Chamber Choir. We have instrumental groups for violin and cello, guitar, wind, ocarina, recorder and flute. Heathside also offers individual lessons for all pupils interested in learning to play an instrument.

The school has frequent concerts and performances scheduled throughout the year, where children share their love of music with the larger Heathside community of families and teachers.

Heathside is also renowned for its annual musical performances. Recent productions include Guys & Dolls, Oklahoma, Aladdin, Cats, Pirates of Penzance and the Mikado.

School Council

Part of the leadership and learner voice programme, the Council gives students the opportunity for constructive consultation with the school to make positive change to their school experience. It is an enjoyable role that develops students’ personal, social and academic skills. Elected students come from each tutor group and are actively engaged in regular meetings throughout the year.

Our Ethos
